Stella Starr
(Producer/Director of Vavavavoom! and Theatre of Fur, Burlesque artiste, torchy singer, events manager, graphic designer, curator/archivist for Jeff Keen artwork)

"When I'm good I'm very good, when I'm bad I'm better" - Mae West

Stella Starr is the stage name of Stella Keen - the Founder, Director, Producer and star performer of Vavavavoom! and Theatre of Fur. The daughter of British 60's underground iconic filmmaker and artist Jeff Keen, and painter, Muse and Screen Goddess, Jackie Keen, Stella was born in Brighton UK. She had an extraordinary bohemian beatnik upbringing, for which she is eternally grateful. From this artistic background came a love of the Magic of Cinema - from the Golden Heights of Hollywood to the Glorious Depths of B-Movies!

A former child star of her father's films, playing alongside members of Andy Warhol's infamous Factory, Stella became acquainted from an early age with film, dance and performance art, touring nationally and internationally with her father. As well as performing since the 1970s in arts venues such as The London Filmmaker's Co-op, ICA, Whitechapel Art Gallery, Diorama etc, Stella has also curated a number of film shows and exhibitions. She is currently curating major national and international exhibitions of her father's artwork.

She is trained in Drama and Dance (Ballet, Jazz Dance, Flamenco, Tango, Ballroom/Latin/Jive and Egyptian), and teaches Burlesque performance and stage craft as part of her Vavavavoom! School of Burlesque.

Stella designs all the publicity and writes all the copy for her theatre work. She also writes for various magazines. In 2003, the Courthauld Institute commissioned her to write an essay as part of a special series on various celebrity viewpoints of their art collection. See: http://www.artandarchitecture.org.uk/stories/starr_toulouse-lautrec.html

She has also featured in photographic exhibitions on Neo Burlesque, and in two books on the subject - New Burlesque by Katharina Bosse and Burlesque and the New Bump-n-Grind by Michelle Baldwin.

Stella has worked as a filmmaker and animator, creating animated sequences for the BBC and pop videos, and production assistant on (and appearances in) award winning short films The Morning After and Reptile Day (see: www.nicemedialimited.com) as well as producing her own small press comic Lone Star Comix. Since the age of 14, Stella has been in and out of a variety of bands, most entertainingly as drummer with lo-fi punky pop group SEXLOVEBUSTERBABY! She went on to sing with her Big Band Stella Starr & The Allstars as well as performing regularly within the Vavavavoom! and Theatre of Fur shows.

Back in 1991 she co-produced Andy Walker's Fame Frame - a weekly alternative cabaret night at the Zap Club in Brighton, which developed into The Billy Silver Show. During this time she met and started working with Fezman MC Bob E. Gold and dancer/choreographer Fifi de Maintenon. Even here were the seeds of the idea for Vavavavoom! Stella had always had a great love for Burlesque Striptease, incorporating it into many of her acts, whether it be whipping a cigarette out of a man's mouth or slow-dancing with a live python, to name but a few! From choreographing the showstopper finales with Fifi at The Billy Silver Show, came the vision for Vavavavoom! - a theatrical show that would encompass all these influences into an ‘old style' Burlesque extravaganza with music from the 30's-60's. In 1997, Vavavavoom! was born and has showcased in UK and abroad, establishing an international reputation for excellence as the foremost Neo-Burlesque company in the UK.

Ms. Starr has also worked as a promoter, using her Speakeasy gig nights to showcase some of her favourite bands including Penthouse, Gin Palace, Mudlow, The Guillotines, Glass Eye and Naked Ruby.

Stella Starr Speakeasy

She has performed nationally and internationally - most memorably in New Orleans...

Her loves include finding the funny side of things as much as possible, glamour, retro style, slick operators and gals with 'sassafrass', vintage clothing and frivolous lingerie, singing, dancing and so much music, arts and culture at many levels, movies - particularly Film Noir and B-Movies, comics and cartoons, saucy innuendo, Chap pursuits including gardening, golf and fishing!, rock 'n roll life, hot rods and kustom kulture, Tiki, cocktail lounges, Big Sur, tattoos, Latino spirit and all things Italian, Japanese toys, Southern Gothic, Punk revolution, kitsch aesthetic, Mondo Exotica, the dark edge of town, breezy sunny days and sultry nights, going wild in the country and baking in just a cute frilly pinnie and fluffy mules... Ah, simple pleasures!

Ms. Starr currently lives and works in Suffolk. For many years she has worked as an art director for web design and e-learning programmes for major brands and companies. Now her work is divided more between being an archivist and curator of her father's exhibitions with developing new art and performance projects.

Highlights of Stella Starr's glittering Burlesque stage career have been:

- stepping out of a smoking Orgasmatron in a silver PVC LED flashing bikini!
- bathing in a revolving bath
- writhing in a leopardskin bikini in a giant lifesize hand of King Kong
- wrestling a gorilla
- stripping out of a Gorilla suit and playing the drums with her breasts in a tribute to Blaze Starr
- performing Salome's Dance of the Seven Veils with the head of John the Baptist
- climbing out of a giant clam shell dressed as a sea siren holding a glowing pearl!

Bob E. Gold
(Original Master of Ceremonies - pure gold!)

Fez Man Bob E. Gold was discovered by Stella Starr hustling hashish and filthy postcards in the Tangiers Casbah. His mother had gone to Morocco in the early Fifties for a sex change, but instead had come back pregnant by a roguish camel breeder Mustapha Kwikwan.

Bob's later search for his father took him back to North Africa, where his trademark fez concealed, at various times: a revolver, a pet monkey and a priceless diamond.

Today he makes it his business to make you feel at home in the exotic world that is Vavavavoom! He introduces you to our star performers, before sidling into the shadows to steal your wallet, your heart or your mind...

Fifi de Maintenon

Fifi de Maintenon
(Marvellous choreographer and amazing wardrobe mistress)

Fifi was born into an old French circus family, the only daughter of the Bearded Lady and a fire-eating, sword swallowing juggler. Fifi turned out to be a natural on the trapeze, but tragedy struck when she saw Hitchcock's "Vertigo" badly dubbed into French and has never been able to climb the rope ladder since.

Abandoned by the circus, Fifi made her way to Paris, at first selling matches and then discovered by the impresario from the Moulin Rouge - Sacha Chevalier "The Beast" - as she danced in the snow to keep warm.

Stella spotted her potential immediately, but, knowing the dastardly Chevalier would never let her go, had her drugged, hidden in a wooden crate and shipped to England, where Fifi is currently enjoying a new life of choreography, chiffon and champagne!

Dolly Rocket
(Mistress of Ceremonies & sassy singer)

Stella discovered Dolly, the exotic Bird of Paradise then known as Booblisha (Arabic for Ample Bosomed one) when she had been working in the harem of an Arab prince. She herself was from a royal bloodline - her late grandmother had been the previous prince's head concubine, so the baby Booblisha was born into the family business of pleasuring the Sultans.

She finally escaped captivity when a young eunuch she had fallen in love with her stole a magic flying carpet from the prince's treasury. Although rather threadbare, it carried Booblisha and her lover to the safety of the city.

Dolly and her castrato amore made their living in the bazaars of downtown Arabia - he as a snake oil salesman and she as a mystic palm reader. Stella got them out just in time before their charlatan ways saw them beheaded!

Michael 'Atters' Attree

Michael "Atters" Attree
(Master of Ceremonies, comedy performer, cad about town)

"Atters" is the eternal playboy, very much from the Terry-Thomas School for Scoundrels...

You will find him involved in his experiments into the Arcane and supernatural phenomenon, often at The Monkey's Paw Club and other Dens of Iniquity, writing for The Chap magazine, hosting the World Beard and Moustache Championships or getting titillated by some Floozies! He's also been known to host and perform at some Vavavavoom nights...

Kitty Cha Cha
(Kitty Gal & props/headdress maker extraordinaire)

Kitty Cha Cha is a lively girl who is proud of her assets, which always precede her. You can hear her coming with her cheeky squeal and click of her heels.

Once a good pussy, she now stays out on the tiles all night - jiving with the tom cats. Kitty can also be found prowling the local haberdashery stores - she is a crafty artist and has made many costumes and props for Vavavavoom. Kitty Cha Cha (aka Joanna Goddard) is also a ceramicist:

Joanna Goddard Ceramics - After graduation she worked to commission making tableware & transfer printed tiles, but in 1999 took a change of direction and looked to microbiology, inflatable toys & organic style Japanese architecture for inspiration. Since 2000 she has made abstract sculptural works. See the "Killer Peanuts"!!: www.joannagoddard.co.uk

Therese La Tease

Therese La Tease

Blessed with a lithe slender body, Thérèse is a high-kicking, long-legged, auburn-headed lass. Tipsy on bubbly (and to the gentlemens' delight) she dances on all the best tables in town. With a saucy smile and a wink in her eye, she raises her skirts to reveal those fabled stocking'd pins.

Forever the romantic, when a gentleman once asked her if he could steal her heart she replied: You cannot, sir, for I have dedicated it to Dance”.

Inspired by art from the Fin de Siècle, you must agree that Thérèse – quite literally – is an elegant, graceful and vibrant work of art. See: www.myspace.com/tesofthedrtyvillas

Miss Baby Bones

Baby Bones

Miss Zerrin is an Eastern belly dancer who often succumbs to possession by a demonic spirit known to ancient voodoo tribes as Baby Bones.

To exorcise  the demon a ritualistic dance is undertaken, involving passion, shimmying, revealing clothing and the breathing of fire. Front row seats are advised not to feed the demon...

She also promotes her own Burlesque nights including 'Club Smooch'!

Honour Mission

Who IS Honour Mission? Born of regal Celtic descent, she could run like a mountain goat and swim like a trout.

She soon grew.....A LOT and was shipped off to be educated in everything. But she was destined to entertain. She became very familier with the circus folk. Especially 'Beardy' the dwarf and his funny little monkey. She went on to perform with an underground Russian dance troupe in Cuba and there she took to men, vodka and cigars with great gusto.

After many travels she went incognito. The mistress of disguise and outrageous accents. During Cowes week on the Isle of Wight, she collaborated with 'Senile Giiit' the infamous dancer and Assassin. He showed her his high kicks and exciting weaponry. She learnt a lot. Then he had a freak accident.

All we now know is this woman is sweet yet dangerous an irressistable temptress. She's somewhere out there......She's HONOUR MISSION!

Honour Mission

Bambi La Boom

Some believe its creation was the result of a calamitous scientific experiment. Whilst Evil genius, Mistress Chimera de Ville was working on the final stages of her transgenderizing transmographication machine, her faithful manservant Igor inadvertently left the door open to her menagerie. Seeing that her favourite bird of paradise had sought refuge within he pursued the creature…the door fatefully slammed SHUT! Others claim it was born as the result of the ill fated romantic liason between Mistress Chimera's pet vulture, and a feather boa. There are those who point to a freak accident which occurred whilst Igor was cleaning the castle lightning conductor with a feather duster…during a violent storm. All we can say is…its curiously named after a cute woodland Disney creature!

Bambi La boom will surprise and delight, intrigue and confuse…and if he gets her way…thoroughly disgust! She will take you on a voyage of delight towards, through, and BEYOND sexual discovery…and then nip round the back to start again! Take this journey which will lift your heart, enthral your senses…and make you thoroughly ashamed of yourself!

Trixy Vixen

Trixy Vixen

Trixy Vixen would describe herself as curvy, cheeky and coy but not that coy! She's been in love with the world of burlesque since she was just a cub and hadn't even heard the word yet! During her college years, Trixy studied performing arts and starred in roles as diverse as the evil fairy nightmare in Sleeping Beauty the pantomime to the sassy Chiffon in Little Shop of Horrors via the ingénue Hope in the lesser known spoof musical, Something's Afoot. Since moving to Brighton, Ms Vixen finally reached her lifetime ambition of singing with a big band courtesy of Brighton Theatre Group. She then discovered Vavavavoom and a new ambition was born…

When the opportunity to study at the first ever Vavavavoom school of Burlesque came up, she jumped at the chance.Since then, Trixy as developed a mixed repetoire of singing and burlesque acts, sometimes mixing the two.In addition to performing with Vavavavoom, she has performed at ‘Rock the System' at Komedia and travelled as far a field as Torquay to perform for ‘Kinky and Quirky'.

Pandora Fox

Pandora Fox started out with the Va Va VaVoom! School of Burlesque, creating cheeky but ever so slightly glamorous sketches that aim to tease in a 'Carry on' fashion. Like Pandora's box, Miss Fox aims to unleash lots of naughties on the audience in the form of singing foxes, blow up pistols, murderous dollies and apple breast implants.

Pandora's scenes are bursting with tongue in cheek comedic fun, raunch, plenty of glitz and more recently a few stuffed chickens. Pandora guarantees a grand finale, with custom made accessories, props, humorous nipple tassles, and plenty of spontaneous booty action with her prized fox tail!

As well as her new found Brighton showgirl lifestyle, Pandora is also a talented artist. She takes many commissions for her fine art portraiture, as well as an increasing demand for her 50's comic style burlesque illustration. All in all a busy fox.

The Flirtinis

The Flirtini's - Infinity Favour & Ruby Demure

A legend waiting to be born, Miss Ruby DeMure exploded onto the scene through a late night encounter with Miss Stella Starr and her school of burlesque in 2007. There she learned to unleash her inner goddess and has been happily titillating the riotous crowds ever since. According to Greek mythology, Ruby was sculpted from the same marble pillar as her exquisite other half, Miss Infinity Favour. It is impossible to describe the wonders of Infinity without finding oneself going on rather (it is believed that in the short time since her debut performance last December, the Oxford English Dictionary have recognised no fewer than 1792 new adjectives coined exclusively in eulogy of her), but for the sake of brevity it will suffice to say that she is really rather good. Sharing the stage as neo-burlesque duo “The Flirtinis”, Ruby Demure and Infinity Favour are quickly building a reputation for daring, often comic burlesque routines which are roughly two parts Carry On film, one part surrealist art movement (with a touch of brazen hussy thrown in for good measure).  If you can't imagine that, why not come and watch them in action rather than hurt your brain trying?

Esmeralda Underwood is an ex-chorus girl turned carnival cooch dancer from Brighton who sold her soul to the Devil in exchange for a century of beauty and fame. That was in 1927, and she's still working today, leaving a trail of broken hearts and Satanic panic in her wake. See:

Alessa D'Amour

Raised by wolves in the wilds of Siberia, this savage siren was a stranger to civilisation, until, lured by the seductive mystique of the burlesque stage, she fell for flimsy finery and twirled tassels with abandon.  Her explosive mixture of raw dynamite and sophisticated  tease will thrill, shock and shake audiences from Paris to Outer Mongolia!

Odee Spodee

Odee Spodee
(Original House DJ)

Odee Spodee was born in a taxi in a thunderstorm.  He washed his hands in muddy water and got sent up. But a little bit of Spanish grease allowed him to break loose by slip, slip, slippin' in between those jailhouse bars.

Early in the morning he hopped a downbound train. The train kept a-rollin' down the line to the bright lights, big city where he fell into a burning darktown poker game, winning a stack of records from three girls named Molly doin' the hully gully. Next Odee was invited to disc jockey at the rambunk-shus Va-va-va-voom club and the joint did jump, jive and wail.

Odee aka Chris Watson is also a talented illustrator. Some of his work appears on this site. You can see the rest on his website: www.chris-watson.co.uk

Sheila Blige Lady Laverne

Special mention & thanks to past collaborators:

Lady Laverne/Sheila Blige

Anyone who ever came to our early VaVaVaVoom's will have undoubtedly have seen a tall, glamorous apparition lurking in the entrance. This stunner was of course Sheila Blige, formally Lady Laverne until an Australian who claimed to be big down under asked her to be his Sheila, to which she obliged.

She has been known to meet, greet and generally bitch at many a peasant who frequents the club scene. So on arrival don't be surprised if you get a venomous greeting from her vicious tongue and if you don't then you're simply not worthy.

Also:
Denise Gough for encouraging Stella to make the dream a reality, and start Vavavavoom in the first place! Also for her unstoppable enthusiasm both backstage and on!
Jules Lawrence - early saxman and set builder, + former band members Laz and Dom Jeffery.
Carina Westling and Jane Manze - Egyptian dancers and contributors
Roger Duncan - performer/stage manager
Amanda aka Lola Aloha - tirelessly good humoured performer

Babs Montana

Babs joined Vavavavoom as a gogo dancer on the first ever night in 1997, and was thus indoctrinated into the sleazy world of the burlesque artiste.

With her magnificent cleavage and imaginative moves she has since become a regular contributor to the club, co-devising and performing numerous cabaret routines from the Naughty Nuns to Rock-a-hula, and whilst not on stage is often seen around the club in various exotic and bizarre guises.

In 2001 Babs formed Dollybox cabaret dance troupe who perform at parties, clubs, festivals and cabaret nights. For further information e-mail: oldclockshop@dsl.pipex.com

Sugarpuss L'Amour

With her head trapped inside a tin of tuna chunks, Sugarpuss L'Amour feared she would die of starvation, or worse... shame. Until that is, she was rescued by Stella Starr, and transported from her life in Brighton's seedy alleycat underworld of pimps, pussies and purrrrrverts, to the bright lights of stardom with Vavavavoom!

Has your owner put you out with the milk bottes? Thinking of a night on the tiles? Then slink into Sugarpuss L'Amour's basket of delights, let her rub up against your leg, marvel at her fantastic feats of feline grace, and drool at the sensuality of her bottom-displays, until at last you are purring with pleasure!

In her spare time Sugarpuss likes to sleep for at least 23 hours a day, chase small rodents, and lick her private parts.

Tristan Tristar

As well as sometimes performing at Vavavavoom, Tristan runs his own male strip show - Adonis Cabaret.

Adonis Cabaret is a refreshingly different Male Striptease Show for women that breaks all the rules expected from a typical male strip show. Although incredibly daring, the show keeps the audience on their toes and laughing their heads off whilst keeping within the boundaries of what most people would call 'good taste'. The Adonis performers (who are VaVaVaVoom fans) have regular TV spots inc. Eastenders and Graham Norton, check out the video clips on the site www.Adoniscabaret.co.uk

Joanna Neary is a Brighton based comedienne best known for such high art as her notorious Dolphin Girl character, Celia Johnson going beserk when trying to simply buy some bread and Mr Timkins, a nasty cat who proudly shows off his bum hole with secret hatred of the audience.

Her latest comedy show was described as ' somewhere between a Radio 4 play and sitting next to the mad woman on the bus. Neary's highly original monologues and songs in this one woman show surely mark her out as the illegitimate offspring of Joyce Grenfell and Alan Bennett' - THE GUARDIAN. 'Excellent comic timing' - THE STAGE. She has performed at Vavavavoom shows, both on stage as part of the dance troupe, and also as our Cigarette Girl...
